Wounds and Visions Of A Megalopolis : Montréal
(Up And Coming Festival Hannover 2005)

The festival and the project

The Up And Coming Hannover festival is already at his 8th edition and is becoming more and more important over the years not only in Germany but also all over Europe. This fall, more than 50 young artists from all over the world will be presenting their video projects at the festival.

TIND (thisisnotdesign) has been invited to represent the vision of Montreal's young artists with a video compilation of 60 minutes that will be screened during a special presentation of the festival : "Wounds And Visions of A Megalopolis 2005".

The compilation

The Montreal's compilation of "Wounds And Visions of A Megalopolis 2005" is composed of about 30 videos created by young independant artists from Montreal under 30. The majority of these videos come from students (and former student) of UQAM (University of Quebec in Montreal) and from the Dérapage video festival held each year as part of the design art program of the university. We also present a small selection of the minute moments video nights, a "new movement" created by Thien Vu Dang, artist et VJ from Montreal and Moment Factory, one of the most important and influent goup of video creation and VJing in Montreal.

This compilation presents research and experimentation from Montreal as it is, created by young independant artists. The program is composed of 4 distinct sections :

Independant videoclip and music scene of Montreal
Dérapage : Montréal's universities video festival
Dreams and nightmares of young Montréal's artist
1 minute video nights : a new movement is born in Montréal

Diffusion

TIND's goal with this project is to let people know about the new talents and creativity that is emerging from Montreal these days in the field of video creation. Our goal is to distribute, diffuse in as many festivals we can, all over the world. If you are a member of an artist group, festival or broadcaster, don't hesitate to contact us !

Independant videoclip and music scene of Montréal
We find an important movement of independents music in Montreal (by independent, we mean without any real budget, auto produce, auto distributed, completely homemade!). More a more independents festivals are organising themselves and present new artists to Montreal's fans that are more and more eager to discover new musical genre. The fusion of video and music is becoming very important in part because of all these new festivals, radio and TV programs specializing in new music styles, specially the ones broadcasted on the independents TV channels. Vjing (live video mixing) is also taking an important place during concerts, video clips are all over our screens; in fact Montreal is a really an interesting place to be right now for all that is musical and visual creation !

Dérapage : Montréal's universities video festival

Dérapage is a festival of audio visual exploration (the soundtrack is as much important than the visual) presenting non narrative video. It has been created by students and teachers from the design art school at UQAM (University of Quebec in Montreal). The idea is to push first time videasts, young artists to create non narrative and original video. The festival is now at is 5th year and has given the chance to many creators to get to know them and push their video art career further.

title : Density

artist : Patrick Doan

length : 3:47mins

year of production : 2005

short synopsis : sensory video about displacement, time, and space. It attempts to capture the essence of temporal spaces that we so often dismiss frivolously. The relationship between audio and video is intensified by its complimentary, subconscious transmission of its fundamental characteristics. Overall, this pieces comments on the ephemeral nature of long term memory, and how its representation is distorted through a person's environment, experience, and temper.

short synopsis : video about sleep, memory, and staying up late in the wee hours of the morning. the lack of sleep, driven by insomnia, unwillingly so. the lines blurring reality and imaginary blending beyond recognition, crossing each other's thresholds, and merging to form a new layer. it's a short comment on the hours we spend awake, conscious, and the other hours far away, in the deep subconscious, giving way to thoughts projected from the reality of the waking state. it's a work about insomnia in the information age - information on the television screen, information deep seated within your cortex, always flowing, amorphous in nature, and never idling.

short synopsis : "Noise" comments on the current state of the televised media industry, and the dissonance that transpires as a result from loss of information integrity. Many of today's news broadcasts have become unilateral in their depiction of world events and social issues - it is time that we as a people recognize this insidious direction and engage ourselves in reforming the warped views being projected onto the silver screen.
